NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN
GREAT HALL, EXETER UNIVERSITY
THE Opening Gambit. "Have you been on the cider?" enquires Jonn of the lurching throng, evidently informed that said beverage is manufactured and widely available in towns south of Bristol.
The Music. I always half suspected that they were a one-song band and I was right. They use various chords and basslines, and taped samples that would be interesting if only they'd selected interesting ones, but the sum of the parts is usually the same: a livid squall, top-end dominated despite the double helping of bass.
The Spectacle. Not a bad bit of lighting, I suppose. But how odd to see a little toy Bulldog perched in the middle of the stage above a huge fluorescent tooth. Doubtless your stalwart Binny understands such juxtaposition. I can only hazard that the lads are contributing their ha'penn'orth to the muzzles-for-grumpy-dogs debate.
The Kids. Well, they loved it, of course. They jiggled about and described arcs with their long, tassled locks. In all his excitement, one frantic little chum dealt me a blow to the head and then stamped on my toes. Which, I must admit, was his prerogative. Because this is his band now, and I'm just a cynical old-timer with short hair and long trousers, passing judgement from the saddle of a mighty high horse.
Anyone for a bowl of junket?
