They began their assault on the charts over a decade ago with the instruction Kill Your Television, but today Stourbridge indie rockers Ned's Atomic Dustbin are embracing new technology. The band is reforming to film a live DVD at Dudley JBs on Saturday, and fans can come along and see them in action. In their heyday, the band enjoyed a string of hits and toured the world, attracting a legion of long-haired fans wearing baggy shorts and outsized T-shirts. But as their star waned in the mid 90s, their record company Sony pulled the plug on their finances and they split up. Lead singer Jonn Penney went on to form another band called Groundswell, which failed to take off, and he enrolled on a four-year degree in multi-media communication at the University of Wolverhampton, which is teaching him all about web design and computer games. Now 33, he had "no thoughts" about reforming the band until he was asked by JBs owner Colin "Sam" Jukes if the band would do a one-off show to celebrate 30 years of his club. Penney agreed, and the Neds accordingly appeared at Dudley Castle, alongside The Wonder Stuff, last summer and enjoyed themselves so much they got back together again this year. Penney says he is happy to play the odd reunion show, but does not want to revive the band merely to live on past glories. "You think about it, but it's best not to tempt fate by trying to do it again. We've been there and done it and had a good time. "The rehearsal rooms are rammed with kids - I don't think people need the Neds back just yet." In the meantime, the band has been rehearsing a wide range of material for the DVD shoot. "We are doing this because we never really had the chance to say goodbye to our fans," says Penney. "So, when the chance came to make this DVD - by the same firm which did the visual at the V2001 festival - we were happy to do it." The band will be filmed onstage and there will be interview opportunities. "We have deliberately kept the ticket price low so everyone can come and help us celebrate," he added. By Pete Carroll
